The White Room by Carina Lastimosa
I wrote a short play! I’ve been wanting to try my hand at writing, only writing a couple of monologues and scribbling dialogue here and there. Exposition Review partnered up with Our Digital Stories for Expo’s Flash 405. A written contest that gives writers an opportunity to get their work published. ODS’ prompt was simple, to create a piece set in the digital world. I chose to write about my experience as an actor during COVID. It’s been over a year since COVID wrecked all of our worlds and it’s given us all a chance to reflect on what’s evolved and what, unfortunately, has continued to stall. The White Room sums up the frustrations I face as I navigate the world as a Filipina woman. The judges comments for this play, perfectly sums up what I was trying to communicate: “This piece does a remarkable job at poking holes in theatre’s white allyship in just 10 pages. The questions that The White Room raises feel especially relevant given the digital space which heightens the awkwardness, toxicity, and anger that underlie the Zoom niceties.”
Myself, along with 2 other writers, James Nelson (my husband!) and Allison Fradkin were selected to have our plays are published on Exposition Review and produced by Our Digital Stories for one of their upcoming streaming volumes. Honorable mentions, who also get their work published go to Margot Douaihy, Ali MacLean, and Derek Sanchez.
